Spiritually based wood carvings by Nyoman Sumerta
Nyoman Sumerta was born on the small yet beautifully lush island of Bali, Indonesia. Raised in the artistic wood carving community of Siangan village, Gianyar in the centre of the island, from a young age he learned how to carve and design creative works in many types of wood. Now he has turned his carvings into spiritually based designs. Taking inspiration from yoga, Balinese Hinduism and classical Indian motifs, Nyoman creates designs that made one client exclaim: "Nyoman doesn't just carve deities. He carves the essence of the deity into each piece!"
Since coming to Canada, Nyoman has recycled pieces of wood from old furnishings and people’s "junk" and turned it into something gorgeous! More often than not, pieces are made this way, keeping the need for new wood to a minimum. It’s conscious, sustainable beauty we can all enjoy!
Nyoman has sold his product in Bali to people from all over the world and in Canada where he created an original design for the Royal Ontario Museum's traveling exhibition of South Asian art "Ornamenting the Ordinary".
How to Buy
If you are interested in ordering one of Nyoman's pieces or would like a custom designed piece, please contact us for information on costs and approximate length of time it would take to complete your order. Each order is individual and unique hence prices and length of time it will take to fill an order can vary greatly from order to order. We will try to complete your order as quickly as possible and will keep you updated every step of the way on progress. At this time we accept payment by cheque or money order in Canadian funds. Please leave at least four to six weeks to fill the order. We will quote prices based on individual orders. Orders are subject to PST (8%) and shipping expenses. To place your order, email info@sumerta.com.
